Boken var på sin tid revolutionerande pga sin positiva porträttering av lesbisk kärlek. Boken har ett ovanligt positivt slut jämfört med andra böcker med lesbiskt tema från samma tidsperiod. Publicerades ursprungligen som ”The price of salt” 1952 och blev filmatiserad under 2015.
